Preserving Your Tools

I can see it now...you walk into your garage, believing that all is well, neat, and organized. The reality is, well, it could be, um, neater. If your garage lives in constant chaos, and you (or your husband) can't find anything to save your life, this article is for you. Having tools of all sorts that are easily accessible is essential for using your time efficiently during a project (instead of spending half of your time searching for your tools). Here are some ways to help you become more organized, and preserve your expensive investment...and man's second best friend!!

  • Keep those tools dry. Water damage of any kind will most likely ruin the majority of tools. Water damage will rot wood handles and certain metal tools to rust.

  • If your tool requires it, oil any moving parts. This keeps them lubricated, and thus keeps them in good working order.

  • Sharpen your blades. A good, sharp blade will work so much better than a dull one. You can take them to someone to sharpen them, but whetstone or a file will do the trick for most jobs.

  • Clean your tools. If there is dirt, grime, dist, or any other substance on there, get a clean cloth or paper towel

  • Use your toolbox! You bought that toolbox for a reason, so use it! Storing your tools on the floor is a bad idea; not only can they get dirty, they can be easily broken by other people (or yourself) stepping on them. Save yourself some time and heartache and put your tools away!

  • If you have a tool handle made of wood, sand it down if it is old. Wooden handles tend to rot, and therefore are prone to splintering, breaking, and causing damage. If sanding is not up your alley, use the handyman's best friend...duct tape! That will also serve as a good grip for a slippery handle.
