What to do with your old Christmas Tree
This is the time of year where tradition is in the forefront of our minds. Those of us who celebrate the Christmas holiday immerse ourselves in many traditions; at the top of that list is the Christmas Tree. Some people have artificial trees, and what to do with those is obvious...put them back in the box and put them up again next year. However, some of us like the look, feel, and smell of a REAL Christmas tree. They are the perfect addition to your holiday celebrations, but what do you do with these things? Below are some suggestions on what to do with your old Christmas Tree.
- If you like birds, make it a bird sanctuary! Move the entire tree to your back yard, minus your indoor decorations. After it is moved to an outdoor location, string popcorn, orange slices, and other bird treats from its branches, and just watch the birds fly in!
- Consider buying a live tree that is plant-able. Go to your local tree farm, and ask for this option. Have them bundle the roots or place them in a container, and use the tree as normal during the holidays! Be sure to dig your hole before winter sets in, as the ground may be too hard to dig once winter comes. Plant the tree as soon as possible after Christmas.
- If you have access to a chipper, chip your Christmas tree up, and use the remainder as mulch for your plants in the spring. Offer to take your friends, family, and neighbor's trees off their hands too! Not only will you get rid of their trees for them, you will save yourself a bundle next spring when you don't have to buy mulch!
- Check with your area's wildlife refuge, lake, or other nature habitat. They can use Christmas trees for refuge in ponds and lakes for fish.
- Local tree dumps are another place to take your Christmas tree. Many towns in our area have them, and if your town doesn't have a tree dump, your garbage disposal company will know of where to take your leftover Christmas tree.
